Mississippi State QB K.J. Costello and Kansas State DB Jahron McPherson Named Walter Camp FBS Players of the Week, presented by Generation UCAN
The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced the Football Bowl Subdivision National Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, presented by Generation UCAN, for games ending September 26.
About the Award: This is the 17th year that the Walter Camp Football Foundation will honor one offensive and one defensive player as its national Football Bowl Subdivision player of the week during the regular season. Recipients are selected by a panel of national media members and administered by the Foundation.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
K.J. COSTELLO, MISSISSIPPI STATE
Graduate Senior, Quarterback, Rancho Santa Margarita, CA/Santa Margarita/Stanford
K.J. Costello passed for a Southeastern Conference-record 623 yards as Mississippi State defeated sixth-ranked LSU, 44-34, on the road. Costello completed 36-of-60 passes and threw for five touchdowns. His 623 passing yards were the 11th-highest total in FBS history.
Notes: K.J. Costello is the third Mississippi State player to win the award since 2004 (and the first offensive honoree), joining former Bulldogs Quinton Culberson (LB, Nov. 5, 2006) and Richie Brown (LB, Oct. 5, 2014).
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
JAHRON McPHERSON, KANSAS STATE
Senior, Defensive Back, Basehor, KS/Butler CC
Along with his last minute game-clinching interception, Jahron McPherson record 11 tackles, one for a loss, and forced fumble as Kansas State came-from-behind to defeat third-ranked Oklahoma, 38-35. McPherson’s interception ended Oklahoma’s attempted go-ahead scoring drive with 33 seconds remaining and sealed the Wildcats’ first victory of the season.
Notes: Jahron McPherson is the fourth Kanas State player to earn the recognition since 2004, and the first since Nov 4, 2012 (Allen Chapman, DB).

Walter Camp, “The Father of American
football,” first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp – a former Yale
University athlete and football coach – is also credited with developing play
from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the
restriction of play to eleven men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation
