North Carolina State QB Devin Leary and Oregon Safety Bennett Williams Named Walter Camp National FBS Players of the Week, presented by Generation UCAN

The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced the Football Bowl Subdivision National Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, presented by Generation UCAN, for games ending September 25.   

About the Award: This is the 18th year that the Walter Camp Football Foundation will honor one offensive and one defensive player as its national Football Bowl Subdivision player of the week during the regular season. Recipients are selected by a panel of national media members and administered by the Foundation.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

DEVIN LEARY, NORTH CAROLINA STATE

RS Sophomore, Quarterback, Sickersville, NJ/Timber Creek

Devin Leary completed 32-of-44 passes for 238 yards and four touchdowns, including the go-ahead 22-yard touchdown pass in the second overtime, as North Carolina State defeated ninth-ranked Clemson, 27-21.  It was the Wolfpack’s first win against a top ten team since 2012.

Notes: Devin Leary is the fifth NC State player to earn Walter Camp National Player of Week honors, and the first since former Wolfpack linebacker Nate Irving did exactly 11 years ago (Sept. 26, 2010). 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

BENNETT WILLIAMS, OREGON

Junior, Safety, Campbell, CA/St. Francis

Bennett Williams recorded eight tackles and two interceptions, one of which he returned 68 yards for a touchdown as third-ranked Oregon defeated Arizona, 41-19. 

Notes: Bennett Williams is the 10th Oregon player since 2004 to earn Walter Camp National Player of Week honors, and the first since running back CJ Verdell (Oct. 27, 2019).

Matt Corral earns Offensive Player of Week honors for the second straight week after accounting for seven touchdowns (3 passing, 4 rushing) in the 17th-ranked Rebels’61-21 victory over Tulane.  Corral completed 23-of-31 passes for 335 yards and rushed for 68 more.

Notes: Matt Corral joins former quarterback Denard Robinson (Michigan, Sept. 5 and 12, 2010) and Lamar Jackson (Lousville, Sept, 4 and 11, 2016) as repeat Walter Camp Player of Week honorees.  Corral also joins Jackson, Case Keenum (Houston), Jarvis Jones (Georgia), Adrian Peterson (Oklahoma) and Colt McCoy (Texas) as three-time Player of Week recipients.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

KYLE HAMILTON, NOTRE DAME

Junior, Safety, Atlanta, GA/Marist School

Kyle Hamilton recorded 10 tackles (7 solo), deflected two passes, and made a late fourth-quarter interception to seal Notre Dame’s 27-13 victory over Purdue.  With the win, the 12th-ranked Fighting Irish improved to 3-0.

Notes: Kyle Hamilton is the 11th Notre Dame player since 2004 to earn Walter Camp National Player of Week honors, and the first since former teammate Julian Okwara (Sept. 29, 2019).

In two games in a five-day span this week, Matt Corral completed 43-of-65 passes for 662 yards and six touchdowns (with no interceptions) as 20th-ranked Ole Miss defeated Louisville, 43-24, and Austin Peay, 54-17.   Corral passed for 381 yards against Louisville on Monday and had five touchdown passes in the win over Austin Peay on Saturday.

Notes: It is the second time Corral has earned Walter Camp Offensive Player of Week honors (Nov. 1, 2020).  Corral is also the third Ole Miss player to earn Player of Week honors since 2004.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

HAYDEN HENRY, ARKANSAS

RS Senior, Linebacker, Little Rock, AK/Pulaski Academy

Hayden Henry recorded a game-high 15 tackles as Arkansas (2-0) defeated 15th-ranked Texas, 40-21.  Hunter led a Razorback defense that allowed the Longhorns their lowest yardage total in a game since 2015.

Notes: Hayden Henry is the fourth Arkansas player to earn Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004, and the first since former Razorback quarterback Ryan Mallett (Sept. 19, 2010).

Texas RB Bijan Robinson and Iowa DB Riley Moss Named Walter Camp National FBS Players of the Week, presented by Generation UCAN

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

BIJAN ROBINSON, TEXAS

Sophomore, Running Back, Tucson, AZ/Salpointe Catholic

Bijan Robinson rushed for 103 yards and one touchdown and added 73 receiving yards and one more touchdown as 21st-ranked Texas opened up the 2021 season with a 38-18 victory over 23rd-ranked Louisiana-Lafayette.   Robinson scored on a seven-yard run and had an 18-yard scoring reception to lead the Longhorns.

Notes: Bijan Robinson is the 11th Longhorn to earn Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004. Linebacker Joseph Ossai (Nov. 1) and quarterback Sam Ehlinger (Sept. 13) both earn recognition during the 2020 season.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

RILEY MOSS, IOWA

Senior, Defensive Back, Ankeny, IA/Centennial

Riley Moss recorded two interceptions for touchdowns as Iowa opened up the 2021 season with a 34-6 victory over Big Ten-rival Indiana. Moss had interception returns of 30 and 55 yards for touchdowns and added one tackle and two pass breakups for the Hawkeyes.

Notes: Riley Moss is the sixth Iowa player to earn Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004, and the first since former Hawkeye quarterback Nate Stanley (Oct. 14, 2018).
