Walter Camp Football Foundation Announces “Players to Watch” for 2020 Player of the Year Award

The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced the names of twenty “Players to Watch” for its 2020- Player of the Year award, the fourth-oldest college football award in the nation.

Players from the top seven teams in the most recent College Football Playoff rankings are on the list, including quarterback Mac Jones, wide receiver Davonta Smith and running back Najee Harris from top-ranked Alabama. Quarterback Ian Book from second-ranked Notre Dame is on the watch list along with quarterback Trevor Lawrence and running back Travis Etienne from third-ranked Clemson.    

The 20-player watch list includes eight quarterbacks, six running backs, six defensive players and two wide receivers/tight ends.  Fourteen different schools and eight conferences are represented on the list.

The Walter Camp Player of the Year is voted on by the 130 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors.   A list of five finalists will be announced on Monday, December 28, and the winner announced on ESPN SportsCenter on Thursday, January 7. 

The 2019 Walter Camp Player of the Year was former LSU (and current Cincinnati Bengals) quatrerback Joe Burrow.

Michael Carter – Senior, Running Back, Navarre, FL/Navarre

Javonte Williams – Junior, Running Back, Wallace, NC/Wallace-Rose Hill HS

Michael Carter (24-308, 2 TD’s) and Javonte Williams (23-236, 3 TD’s) combined for a NCAA-record 544 rushing yards as 17th-ranked North Carolina defeated 10th-ranked Miami, 62-26.  It was the seventh time in NCAA history that two teammates rushed for 200+ yards in a game.   The Tar Heels improved to 8-3 with the victory.

Notes: Michael Carter and Javonte Williams are the fifth and sixth UNC players to earn Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004, and the third this season joining teammate Sam Howell (Nov. 15).

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

TALANOA HUFANGA, USC

Junior, Safety, Corvallis, OR/Crescent Valley HS

Talanoa Hufanga registered 17 tackles (11 solo), including two for losses, forced one fumble and had one interception as 15th-ranked USC (5-0) defeated UCLA, 43-38.  USC clinched the Pac-12 South Division title with the victory.

Notes: Talanoa Hufanga is the sixth USC player to earn Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since the award began in 2004, and the first since former QB Cody Kessler (Oct. 19, 2014).

Florida QB Kyle Trask and Indiana LB Micah McFadden Named Walter Camp FBS Players of the Week, presented by Generation UCAN

Kyle Trask passed for 433 yards (35-of-49) and four touchdowns as sixth-ranked Florida defeated Tennessee, 31-19.  Trask threw scoring passes of 4, 2, 8 and 12 yards as the Gators clinched the SEC East Division regular-season title.

Notes: Kyle Trak is the 11th Florida player to earn Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004, and the first since defensive end Jonathan Greenard (Nov. 17, 2019).

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

MICAH McFADDEN, INDIANA

Junior, Linebacker, Tampa, FL/Plant

Micah McFadden registered nine tackles (6 solo), including two for losses, and two quarterback sacks as 12th-ranked Indiana (6-1) defeated 16th-ranked Wisconsin, 14-6.  It was Indiana’s first win at Wisconsin’s Camp Randall Stadium since 2001.

Jaret Patterson rushed for 409 yards (the second-highest single-game total in FBS history) and tied a FBS record with eight rushing touchdowns as Buffalo defeated Kent State, 70-41.  Patterson averaged 11.8 yards per carry (36 carrries, 409 yards) and scored had four scoring runs of 30 or more yards as the Bulls improved to 4-0 with the victory.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

NATE LANDMAN, COLORADO

Senior, Linebacker, Danville, CA/Monte Vista

Nate Landman recorded 11 tackles, including three quarterback sacks, as Colorado improved to 3-0 with a 20-10 victory over San Diego State.  Landman led the Buffs’ defense that held SDSU’s offense to just one field goal, 155 yards total offense.

Senior, Quarterback, Grafton,OH/Midview

Dustin Crum became the first player in Kent State history to throw for three touchdowns and rush for two scores in a game as the Golden Flashes defeated Akron, 69-35.  Crum passed for 348 yards (22-of-25) and three scores, while rushing for 104 for two touchdowns.  The Golden Flashes are 3-0 for the first time since 1958.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

ZAVEN COLLINS, TULSA

Redshirt Junior, Linebacker, Hominy, OK/Hominy

Zaven Collins had a game-high 15 tackles (8 solo) and 0.5 tackles for loss, and recorded one interception which he returned 96 yards for a game-winning touchdown in overtime as 25th-ranked Tulsa (5-1) defeated Tulane, 30-24.    Tulsa scored 21 points in the 4th quarter and nine more in overtime for the win that moved the Golden Hurricane to 5-0 in American Athletic Conference play.

SAM HOWELL, NORTH CAROLINA

Sophomore, Quarterback, Indian Trail, NC/Sun Valley

Sam Howell completed 32-of-45 passes and set school records in passing yards (550) and touchdown passes (6) as North Carolina rallied to a 59-53 victory over Wake Forest.  Howell also rushed for a touchdown, one that sealed the come-from-behind victory for the Tar Heels (6-2).

Notes: Sam Howell is the fourth UNC player to earn Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004, and the first since former Tar Heel QB Mitch Trubisky (Sept. 25, 2016).

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

JARELL WHITE, CINCINNATI

Senior, Linebacker, Cincinnati, OH/La Salle

Jarell White recorded seven tackles, one quarterback sack, one quarterback hurry, and one interception which he returned 26 yards for a touchdown as seventh-ranked Cincinnati (7-0) defeated East Carolina, 55-17.  With the win, the Bearcats have won 19 consecutive games.

D’Eriq King accounted for 535 yards as 10th-ranked Miami defeated North Carolina State, 44-41.  King completed 31-of-41 passes for 430 yards and five touchdowns and added 105 rushing yards as the Hurricanes improved to 6-1.

Notes: D’Eriq King is the fifth Miami player to earn Walter Camp National FBS Player of Week honors since the award started in 2004, and the first since DE Gregg Rousseau (Nov. 3, 2019).  King also earned National Offensive Player of Week honors on Oct. 28, 2018 as a member of the Houston Cougars.

TARRON JACKSON, COASTAL CAROLINA

Redshirt Senior, Defensive End, Aiken, SC/Silver Bluff HS

Tarron Jackson recorded 10 tackles, 2.5 quarterback sacks, 2 quarterback hurries, and forced one fumble as 15th-ranked Coastal Carolina defeated South Alabama, 23-6.  With the win, Coastal Carolina improved to 7-0, 5-0 in the Sun Belt Conference.

Matt Corral completed 31-of-34 passes for 412 yards and six touchdowns as Ole Miss defeated SEC-rival Vanderbilt, 54-12   His 19-for-19 start in the first half broke Eli Manning’s record for consecutive completions that stood for 19 years.

Notes: Matt Corral is the second Ole Miss player to earn Walter Camp National FBS Player of Week honors since the award started in 2004, joining former Rebel running back Dexter McCluste (Nov. 15, 2009).

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

JOSEPH OSSAI, TEXAS

Junior, Linebacker, Conroe, TX/Oak Ridge

Joseph Ossai recorded 12 tackles (7 solo) and three quarterback sacks, while recovering two fumbles (forcing one) as Texas defeated Oklahoma State, 41-34, in overtime.   With the win, Texas improved to 4-2 on the season.

Cincinnati QB Desmond Ridder and Wake Forest S Nick Anderson Named Walter Camp FBS Players of the Week, presented by Generation UCAN

The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced the Football Bowl Subdivision National Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, presented by Generation UCAN, for games ending October 24.

About the Award: This is the 17th year that the Walter Camp Football Foundation will honor one offensive and one defensive player as its national Football Bowl Subdivision player of the week during the regular season. Recipients are selected by a panel of national media members and administered by the Foundation.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

DESMOND RIDDER, CINCINNATI

Junior, Quarterback, Louisville, KY/St., Xavier

Desmond Ridder accounted for four touchdowns (3 rushing, 1 passing) as ninth-ranked Cincinnati defeated 16th-ranked SMU, 42-13.   Ridder passed for 126 yards and one score, while rushing for 179 yards and three more scores, including a 91-yarder, to lead the 4-0 Bearcats.

Notes: Desmond Ridder is the first Cincnnati player to earn Walter Camp National FBS Player of Week honors since the award started in 2004.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

NICK ANDERSON, WAKE FOREST

Freshman, Safety, Clifton, VA/Centreville

Nick Anderson had 11 tackles and three interceptions as Wake Forest defeated 19th-ranked Virginia Tech, 23-16.   Anderson’s third interception sealed the victory in the fourth quarter. Anderson led a Demon Deacon (3-2, 2-2 in ACC) defense that held the Hokies to a season-low point total.  Anderson is the first Wake Forest player since 1987 to record three interceptions in a game.
