The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced the Football Bowl Subdivision National Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for games ending October 5, presented by The Heights Group at Morgan Stanley.

About the Award: This is the 21st year that the Walter Camp Football Foundation will honor one offensive and one defensive player as its national Football Bowl Subdivision player of the week during the regular season.   It is the nation’s longest running Player of Week award.

                                               

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

ELI HOLSTEIN, PITTSBURGH

RS Freshman, Quarterback, Zachary, LA

Eli Holstein led Pitt to its first 5-0 start since 1991 with a 34-24 victory at ACC-rival North Carolina.  Holstein totaled 457 yards in total offense and accounted for four touchdowns.  He threw for a Pitt freshman-record 381 yards on 25-of-42 passing with three touchdowns.  He was the Panthers’ leading rusher with 76 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries (7.6 avg.). 

Notes: It is the ninth time a Pitt player has earned Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004, and the first since running back Israel Abanikanda on Oct. 9, 2022.

 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

CAMERON WHITFIELD, LOUISIANA

Redshirt Junior, Linebacker, Houston, TX

Cameron Whitfield tied a school-record with 4.0 quarterback sacks while adding six tackles and a pair of forced fumbles in Louisiana’s 23-13 victory at Southern Miss.   Whitfield’s forced fumbles on sacks on the Golden Eagles’ final two drives of the game.  It was Louisiana’s first win against Southern Miss since 1993.

Notes: Cameron Whitfield is the second Louisiana player to earn Walter Camp National FBS Player of Week honors since 2004, joining former running back Tyrell Fenroy (Oct. 5, 2008).

Alabama QB Jalen Milroe and Boston College DE Donovan Ezeiruaku named Walter Camp National FBS Players of the Week, presented by The Heights Group at Morgan Stanley

RS Junior, Quarterback, Katy, TX

Jalen Milroe accounted for a career-best 491 total yards and four touchdowns in the Crimson Tide’s 41-34 win over No. 2 Georgia.  He threw for a career-high 374 yards and two scores on 27-of-33 passing, and added 117 rushing yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns (7 and 36 yards). With the victory, Alabama improved to 4-0, 1-0 in the Southeastern Conference.

Notes: It is the 20th time an Alabama player has earned Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004.  Milroe is the first Alabama quarterback to be honored since Blake Sims on September 21, 2014.

 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

DONOVAN EZEIRUAKU, BOSTON COLLEGE

Senior, Defensive End, Williamstown, NJ

Donovan Ezeiruaku finished with a career-best 14 tackles (10 solo) and three quarterback sacks as Boston College came-from-behind to defeat Western Kentucky, 21-20.    Trailing 20-7 entering the final quarter, the Eagles defensive unit forced WKU into a punt, a strip sack (caused by Ezeiruaku), and a turnover on downs over its last three offensive series.   With the win, BC improved to 4-1 on the season.

Notes: Donovan Ezeiruaku is the seventh Boston College player to earn Walter Camp National FBS Player of Week honors since 2004, and first since former Eagle defensive end Wyatt Ray (Sept. 16, 2018).

James Madison QB Alonza Barnett III and Navy LB Colin Ramos named Walter Camp National FBS Players of the Week, presented by The Heights Group at Morgan Stanley

ALONZA BARNETT III, JAMES MADISON

RS Sophomore, Quarterback, Whitsett, NC

Alonza Barnett III set a school record with seven touchdowns and recorded career highs in every statistical category to lead James Madison to a 70-50 win at North Carolina. He finished the game 22-of-34 for 388 passing yards and five touchdowns while rushing 13 times for 99 yards (7.6 avg) and two scores. His 487 total yards ranked third in JMU single-game history, while his 388 passing total was tied for seventh. With the win, JMU improved to 3-0.

 

Notes: It is the second time a James Madison player has earned Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004 (defensive lineman Jalen Green was recognized on Oct. 29, 2023).

 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

COLIN RAMOS, NAVY

Senior, Linebacker, Wayne, NJ

Colin Ramos recorded a career-high 20 tackles in Navy’s 56-44 win over No. 23 Memphis. The 20 tackles were the most by any player in the FBS this year and the most by a Navy player since 2007.  Ramos also recorded Navy’s only two tackles for a loss, Navy’s only sack and broke up a pass in the end zone that saved a touchdown on a drive that Memphis ultimately came up empty.  With the win, Navy improved to 3-0, 2-0 in the American Athletic Conference.

 

Notes: Colin Ramos is the fourth Navy player to earn Walter Camp National FBS Player of Week honors since 2004, and first since safety John Marshall on Nov. 20, 2022.

RS Senior, Quarterback, Grapevine, TX

Alan Bowman matched a career high with five touchdown passes as 13th-ranked Oklahoma State defeated Tulsa 45-10. Bowman finished the contest 24-for-31 (77%) and passing for 396 yards in just three quarters of action.  Bowman passed for four of his touchdowns in the first half as the Cowboys took a 28-0 lead, and improved to 3-0 on the season.

Notes: It is the ninth time an Oklahoma State player has earned Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004, and the first since running back Ollie Gordon II (Oct. 22, 2023).

 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

ANTWAUN POWELL-RYLAND, VIRGINIA TECH

RS Senior, Defensive Line, Portsmouth, VA

Antwaun Powell-Ryland tallied seven tackles, including four quarterback sacks along with two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in the Hokies’ 37-17 victory over Old Dominion. He matched his own school record-tying total of four sacks from the 2023 game against Wake Forest.

TETAIROA MCMILLAN, ARIZONA

Junior, Wide Receiver, Waimanalo, HI

Tetairoa McMillan had 10 catches for 304 yards and four touchdowns in 21st-ranked Arizona’s 61-39 victory over New Mexico. He became the first player in FBS history to have a game with 10-plus receptions, 300-plus receiving yards, 30-plus yards per reception and four-plus receiving touchdowns. His 304 receiving yards were the second most in Big 12 history and his four touchdowns tied for the third best in league history.

 Notes: It is the sixth time an Arizona player has earned Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004, and the first since former Wildcat quarterback Khalil Tate (October 8, 2017).

 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

JACKSON WOODARD, UNLV

Senior, Linebacker, Little Rock, Ark./Little Rock Christian HS

Jackson Woodard recorded a game-high 11 tackles in UNLV’s season-opening 27-7 win at Houston.  He had four tackles for loss, including a career-best three quarterback sacks.  Woodard also recorded one pass breakup and helped the Rebels hold Houston to just 38 yards rushing and 247 yards of total offense.  The win was UNLV’s first against a Big 12 opponent since 2008.

Notes: Jackson Woodard is the first UNLV player to earn Walter Camp National FBS Player of Week honors since 2004.

JAYDEN DANIELS, LSU

Senior, Quarterback, San Bernardino, CA

Jayden Daniels became the first player in FBS history to throw for at least 350 yards and run for at least 200 yards as 18th-ranked LSU (7-3, 5-2 in SEC) defeated Florida, 52-35.  Daniels’ 606 yards of total offense included 372 yards passing and 234 yards rushing — 85 of which came on the longest run by an LSU quarterback in program history in the second quarter. He scored five touchdowns in all.

 

Notes: Jayden Daniels is the 13th LSU player to earn Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004.  Linebacker Harold Perkins was the last LSU honoree (Nov. 13, 2022).

 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

DEMARI HENDERSON, UCF

Sophomore, Defensive Back, Sanford, FL

Demari Henderson had two interceptions, recovered one fumble, and tallied four tackles as UCF defeated 15th-ranked Oklahoma State, 45-3.   UCF’s dominant defense held OSU without a touchdown for the first time in more than a full calendar year and held the Cowboys (averaged 180 rushing yards a game) to just 52.

 

Notes: Demari Henderson is the fifth UCF player to earn Walter Camp National FBS Player of Week honors since 2004, and the first since Dillon Gabriel (Sept. 15, 2019).   He is also the second defensive honoree (Terrance Plummer, Oct. 12, 2014).

The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced the Football Bowl Subdivision National Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for games ending September 2.  Please note:  Outstanding performances from games played on September 3 and 4 will be considered for next week’s awards.

SHEDEUR SANDERS, COLORADO

Junior, Quarterback, Dallas, TX

Shedeur Sanders passed for a school-record 510 yards and threw for four touchdowns as Colorado defeated 17th-ranked TCU, 45-42.  Sanders, who completed 38-of-47 passes in the game, led the Buffs to their first win against a ranked opponent since 2019, connected to four different CU receivers who totaled over 100 yards each.   Sanders also became the first player since 1996 to throw for 500+ yards in his FBS debut.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

KAIMON RUCKER, NORTH CAROLINA

Senior, Linebacker, Hartwell, GA

Senior linebacker Kaimon Rucker recorded eight tackles (6 solo), including 5.5 tackles for loss, and two quarterback sacks as North Carolina opened the 2023 season with a 31-17 victory over South Carolina in the Duke’s Mayo Classic.  Rucker led a Tar Heel defense that tallied nine sacks and limited South Carolina to -2 yards rushing.

Notes: It is the seventh time a North Carolina player has earned Walter Camp National Player of the Year honors since 2004. Kaimon Rucker is the first Tar Heel defensive POW honoree since DE Kareem Martin (Nov. 17, 2013).

Walter Camp, “The Father of American football,” first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp – a former Yale University athlete and football coach – is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side.
