The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced the Football Bowl Subdivision National Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, presented by 777 Partners, for games ending November 26.  

About the Award: This is the 19th year that the Walter Camp Football Foundation will honor one offensive and one defensive player as its national Football Bowl Subdivision player of the week during the regular season. Recipients are selected by a panel of national media members and administered by the Foundation.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

CALEB WILLIAMS, USC

Sophomore, Quarterback, Washington, DC/Gonzaga College

Caleb Williams accounted for four touchdowns (1 passing, 3 rushing) as sixth-ranked USC defeated 15th-ranked Notre Dame, 38-27.  Williams passed for 232 yards (18-of-22) and rushed for 35 yards to lead the Trojans.  USC was the first team all season to total 400+ offensive yards on the Fighting Irish defense.  With the win, USC improved to 11-1 and will play Utah in Friday’s Pac-12 Championship Game.

Notes: Caleb Williams wins Offensive Player of Week for the second time this season (Oct. 30) and is the eighth USC honoree to earn Walter Camp National Player of Week honors since the award started in 2004.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

SYDNEY BROWN, ILLINOIS

Senior, Defensive Back, London, Ontario/St. Stephens Episcopal (Fla.)

Sydney Brown recorded 10 tackles (4 solo) and had two interceptions and one fumble recovery as Illinois defeated Northwestern, 41-3.  Brown also became the first FBS player to return an interception (38 yards) and fumble recovery (53 yards) for a touchdown in a single game.  With the win, Illinois improved to 8-4, 5-3 in the Big Ten.

Notes: Sydney Brown is the third Illinois player to earn Walter Camp National Player of Week honors since 2004, joining former Fighting Illini running back Mikel LeShoure (Nov. 21, 2010) and linebacker Jake Hansen (Oct. 20, 2019).

Spencer Rattler competed 30-of-37 passes for a career-best 438 yards and set a school record with six touchdown throws as South Carolina defeated fifth-ranked Tennessee, 63-38.  Rattler and the Gamecocks’ 63 points set a school record against a top-five opponent.  With the win, South Carolina improved to 7-4, 4-4 in the Southeastern Conference.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

JOHN MARSHALL, NAVY

Senior, Striker, Highland, MD/Gonzaga College

John Marshall was a dominant force in Navy’s 17-14 victory against 20th-ranked UCF, recording 10 tackles, including a school record four quarterback sacks.  Marshall also forced one fumble as the Midshipmen improved to 4-7, 4-4 in the American Athletic Conference.

Walter Camp 2022 Player of Year Semifinalists Announced

The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced the names of twenty two “Players to Watch” for its 2022 Player of the Year award, the fourth-oldest college football award in the nation.

The 22-player watch list includes nine quarterbacks, five running backs, four wide receiver/tight ends and three defensive players. Sixteen different schools and seven conferences (including independents) are represented on the list.

Former Michigan State running back Kenneth Walker III, who is a member of the Seattle Seahawks, was the 2021 Walter Camp Player of Year.

The Walter Camp Player of the Year is voted on by the 131 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors.  

A list of five finalists will be announced on Wednesday, Nov. 30, and the winner announced on ESPN’s College Football Awards Show on Thursday, December 8.

Drake Maye completed 31-of-49 passes for 448 yards and three touchdowns as 15th-ranked North Carolina defeated Wake Forest, 36-34.  Maye completed passes to nine different receivers as the Tar Heels captured the ACC Coastal Division title and improved to 9-1.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Redshirt Freshman, Linebacker, Cypress, TX/Cy Park HS

Harold Perkins Jr., was a dominant force in 10th-ranked LSU’s 13-10 victory against Arkansas, recording eight tackles, four for loss, four quarterback sacks, two forced fumbles, one pass break up and a quarterback hurry. Perkins clinched the victory with a forced fumble with 1:13 to go.  With the win, LSU improved to 8-2 and clinched a berth in the 2022 SEC Championship Game.

TANNER MORDECAI, SMU

Senior, Quarterback, Waco, TX/Midway HS

Tanner Mordecai set a school record and tied a Football Bowl Subdivision record with nine touchdown passes as SMU outlasted Houston, 77-63.  It was the highest scoring regulation game in FBS history.  Mordecai had seven touchdown passes in the first half, and finished the game completing 28-of-37 for 379 yards.  He also added 54 rushing yards and one touchdown.  With the victory, SMU improved to 5-4.

Notes: Tanner Mordecai is the fifth SMU player to earn Walter Camp National Player of Week honors since the award started in 2004, and the first since former Mustang quarterback Shane Buechele (Oct. 20, 2019).

Freshman, Cornerback, Phoenix, AZ/Brophy Prep

Freshman Benjamin Morrison recorded seven tackles (4 solo), intercepted two passes (one of which he returned 96 yards for a Fighting Irish touchdown) and broke up one pass as Notre Dame defeated fourth-ranked and previously undefeated Clemson, 35-14.  With the win, Notre Dame improved to 6-3.

Sophomore, Defensive End, Edgewood, WA/Eastside Catholic

J.T. Tuimoloau recorded six tackles (3 for losses), including two quarterback sacks, forced and recovered a fumble and intercepted two passes (one of which he returned 14 yards for a touchdown) as second-ranked Ohio State improved to 8-0 with a 44-31 victory over 13th-ranked Penn State.   Tuimoloau also broke up one pass in the victory.

Bo Nix completed 22-of-28 passes for 283 yards and five touchdowns as eighth-ranked Oregon defeated 12th-ranked UCLA, 45-30.   Nix had scoring passes of 17, 49, 2, 17 and 37 yards as the Ducks improved to 6-1, 4-0 in the Pac-12.

Brandon Johnson recorded a career-best nine tackles (8 solo), including two quarterback sacks and one interception Duke defeated Miami, 45-121.  Johnson returned his interception 28 yards for a touchdown in the victory, which improved Duke’s record to 5-3.

Junior, Wide Receiver, Irmo, SC/Dutch Fork

Jalin Hyatt set a Tennessee single-game record with five receiving touchdowns as the sixth-ranked Volunteers defeated third-ranked Alabama, 52-49.   Hyatt, who had six receptions for 207 yards, also tied a Southeastern Conference single-game mark with his six scores, which were 36, 11, 60, 78 and 13 yards. It was Tennessee’s first victory over Alabama since 2006.

AKHEEM MESIDOR, MIAMI

Junior, Defensive Tackle, Ottawa, Ontario/Clearwater Academy

Akheem Mesidor record eight tackles (4 solo), including 3.5 quarterback sacks as Miami defeated Virginia Tech, 20-14.  Mesidor led a Hurricane defense that allowed the Hokies to just 257 yards of total offense in the contest.

ISRAEL ABANIKANDA, PITTSBURGH

Junior, Running Back, Brooklyn, NY/Abraham Lincoln HS

Israel Abanikanda set a Pittsburgh school single-game record with 320 rushing yards (on 36 attempts) and tied a school and Atlantic Coast Conference record with six touchdowns as the Panthers defeated Virginia Tech, 45-29.   Abanikanda broke former Walter Camp Player of Year Tony Dorsett’s previous school record of 303 yards (set on Nov. 15, 1975 vs. Notre Dame).  Abanikanda scored on runs of 38, 17, 29, 5, 10 and 80 yards as Pittsburgh improved to 4-2, 1-1 in the ACC.

Notes: Israel Abankianda is the eighth Pittsburgh player to earn Walter Camp National Player of Week honors since 2004 and the first since former Panther running back Darrin Hall (Nov. 5, 2018).

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

QUINYON MITCHELL, TOLEDO

Sophomore, Cornerback, Williston, FL/Williston HS

Quinyon Mitchell recorded three tackles and made four interceptions, including two he returned for touchdowns, as Toledo defeated Northern Illinois, 52-32.   Mitchell had interception returns of 20 and 25 yards for scores as the Rockets improved to 4-2, 2-0 in the Mid-American Conference.

Notes: Quinyon Mitchell is the second Toledo player to earn Walter Camp National Player of Week honors since 2004, and the first since former Rocket defensive back DeJuan Rogers (Sept. 13, 2015).

TCU quarterback Max Duggan and Utah cornerback Clark Phillips Named Walter Camp National FBS Players of the Week Presented by 777 Partners

The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced the Football Bowl Subdivision National Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, presented by 777 Partners, for games ending October 1.  

About the Award: This is the 19th year that the Walter Camp Football Foundation will honor one offensive and one defensive player as its national Football Bowl Subdivision player of the week during the regular season. Recipients are selected by a panel of national media members and administered by the Foundation.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

MAX DUGGAN, TCU

Senior, Quarterback, Council Bluffs, IA/Lewis Central HS

Max Duggan accounted for 418 yards (302 passing, 116 rushing) and five touchdowns as TCU defeated 18th-ranked Oklahoma, 55-24.  Duggan completed 23-of-33 passes and three touchdowns, while rushing for two more scores and 116 yards as the Horned Frogs improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2017, and their first win over the Sooners since 2014.

Notes: Max Duggan is the 11th TCU player to earn Walter Camp National Player of Week honors (since 2004) and the first since former defensive end Mat Boesen (Nov. 26, 2017).

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

CLARK PHILLIPS, UTAH

Sophomore, Cornerback, Lakewood, CA/ La Habra HS

Clark Phillips recorded three tackles and three interceptions as 12th-ranked Utah (4-1) defeated Pac-12 rival Oregon State, 42-16. Phillips returned one of his interceptions 38 yards for a touchdown and helped the Ute defense hold the Beavers to just three second-half points.

Notes: Clark Phillips is the sixth Utah player to earn Walter Camp National Player of Week honors since 2004, and the first since former Ute linebacker Hunter Dimock (Nov. 13, 2016).
