124th Walter Camp All-American Notebook

This is the 124th edition of the Walter Camp All-America team – the nation’s oldest All-America team. Twenty-six players have been selected to the first team by the 125 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors.  In addition, 26 players have been selected to the Second Team.

124th Walter Camp All-America Teams Announced

NEW HAVEN, CT – Five players, including Player of the Year Jameis Winston, from top-ranked Florida State  have earned 2013 Walter Camp Football Foundation All-America honors, the 124th honored by the organization.  The nation’s oldest All-America team was announced this evening on The Home Depot ESPN College Football Awards Show.  The Seminoles had two first-team honorees, and three more on the Second Team, including Winston, a redshirt freshman quarterback who earlier this evening was named the 2013 Walter Camp Player of the Year. Florida State Quarterback Jameis Winston is the 2013 Walter Camp Player of the Year

New Haven, CT – Florida State University redshirt freshman quarterback Jameis Winston (Bessemer, AL) has been selected as the 2013 Walter Camp Player of the Year. Walter Camp Foundation President James Monico made the presentation tonight during ESPN’s 6 p.m. edition of SportsCenter.

The Walter Camp Player of the Year is voted on by the nation’s 125 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors. Other finalists for the Walter Camp 2013 Player of the Year award included Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, Northern Illinois quarterback Jordan Lynch, Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron, and Boston College running back Andre Williams.

Duke’s David Cutcliffe Named Walter Camp 2013 Coach of the Year

NEW HAVEN, CT – David Cutcliffe, head coach of the Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division champion Duke University Blue Devils, has been named the Walter Camp 2013 Coach of the Year.  The Walter Camp Coach of the Year is selected by the nation’s 125 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors.  Cutcliffe is the first Duke coach to receive the award, and the first honoree from the ACC since 2001 (Ralph Friedgen, Maryland).

Walter Camp Player of the Year Finalists Announced

New Haven, Conn. – Four quarterbacks and one running back comprise the list of five finalists for the Walter Camp Football Foundation 2013 Player of the Year award.

Senior quarterbacks AJ McCarron (Alabama) and Jordan Lynch (Northern Illinois) lead the list along with redshirt sophomore Johnny Manziel (Texas A&M) and redshirt freshman Jameis Winston (Florida State).  Manziel is a Walter Camp Player of the Year finalist for the second straight year.  The nation’s leading rusher, senior running back Andre Williams (Boston College) rounds out the list of finalists.

1974 All-American Ken Huff Named Walter Camp Alumni Award Recipient

NEW HAVEN, CT – 1974 All-American offensive guard Ken Huff (University of North Carolina) is the recipient of the 2013 Walter Camp “Alumni Award.”  Huff joins a distinguished list of former “Alumni Award” winners, including Alan Page (Notre Dame), Bo Jackson (Auburn), Tony Dorsett (Pittsburgh), Herschel Walker (Georgia), Mark May (Pittsburgh) and last year’s recipient, Derrick Brooks (Florida State). Former Notre Dame and Washington Redskins Quarterback Joe Theismann Named Walter Camp “Distinguished American”

NEW HAVEN, CT – Former University of Notre Dame and Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann is the 2013 recipient of the Walter Camp Football Foundation “Distinguished American” Award.

The Walter Camp “Distinguished American” award is presented each year to an individual who has utilized his or her talents to attain great success in business, private life or public service and who may have accomplished that which no other has done.  He or she may have a record of dedication to mankind that should not pass unrecognized and a life that has been dedicated to the preservation of the American ideal.   The recipient need not have participated in football but must be one who understands its lesson of self-denial, cooperation and teamwork, and one who is a person of honesty, integrity and dedication.  He or she must be a leader, an innovator, even a pioneer, who has reached a degree of excellence that distinguishes him or her from contemporaries, as well as someone who lives within the principles of Walter Camp.
