OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

NAJEE HARRIS, ALABAMA

Senior, Running Back, Antoich, CA/Antioch

Najee Harris rushed for a career-high 206 yards and five touchdowns as second-ranked Alabama defeated SEC-rival Ole Miss, 63-48.   Harris scored on runs of 5, 33, 3, 16 and 39 yards as the Crimson Tide improved to 3-0.

Notes: Najee Harris is the 16^th Alabama player since 2004 to earn Walter Camp National FBS Player of the Week honors, and the first since teammate Davonta Smith on Sept. 29, 2019.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

JUSTIN RICE, ARKANSAS STATE

Senior, Linebacker, Modesto, CA/Modesto

Justin Rice totaled 12 tackles, including four for losses, and three quarterback sacks as Arkansas State defeated Central Arkansas, 50-27.   With the win, Arkansas State improved to 2-2.

Notes: Justin Rice is the first Arkansas State player to earn Walter Camp National FBS Player of the Week honors, and the second from the Sun Belt this season (Louisiana LB Ferrod Gardner, Sept. 13).

K.J. COSTELLO, MISSISSIPPI STATE

Graduate Senior, Quarterback, Rancho Santa Margarita, CA/Santa Margarita/Stanford

K.J. Costello passed for a Southeastern Conference-record 623 yards as Mississippi State defeated sixth-ranked LSU, 44-34, on the road.  Costello completed 36-of-60 passes and threw for five touchdowns.   His 623 passing yards were the 11^th-highest total in FBS history.

Notes: K.J. Costello is the third Mississippi State player to win the award since 2004 (and the first offensive honoree), joining former Bulldogs Quinton Culberson (LB, Nov. 5, 2006) and Richie Brown (LB, Oct. 5, 2014).

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

JAHRON McPHERSON, KANSAS STATE

Senior, Defensive Back, Basehor, KS/Butler CC

Along with his last minute game-clinching interception, Jahron McPherson record 11 tackles, one for a loss, and forced fumble as Kansas State came-from-behind to defeat third-ranked Oklahoma, 38-35.   McPherson’s interception ended Oklahoma’s attempted go-ahead scoring drive with 33 seconds remaining and sealed the Wildcats’ first victory of the season.

Sam Ehlinger completed 25-of-33 passes for 428 yards and five touchdowns as Texas rolled to a 59-3 season-opening victory over UTEP.   All five of Ehlinger’s touchdown passes came in the first half.

Ferrod Gardner posted nine tackles and one quarterback sack as Louisiana defeated 23^rd-ranked Iowa State, 31-14, in the season opener for both teams.   It was the Ragin’ Cajuns first road win over top-25 opponent in school history.

The Walter Camp Football Foundation, an all-volunteer organization and caretaker of the nation’s oldest college football All-America team, has announced its 2020 Preseason All-American teams, presented by Marcum LLP, a national accounting and advisory services firm with offices in major business markets across the United States.  

Fourteen players who earned Walter Camp All-American recognition in 2019 are on the 2020 preseason list.  Leading the First Team offensive unit is junior running back Chuba Hubbard (Oklahoma State), who returns to the Cowboys after rushing for 2,094 yards and 21 touchdowns in 2019.    Ja’Marr Chase (LSU) is a preseason All-America wide receiver after recording 84 receptions for 1,780 yards and 20 touchdowns for the national champion Tigers.  On the offensive line, left tackle Penei Sewell (Oregon) is a preseason honoree after earning First Team accolades a year ago.

On defense, four players who earned Walter Camp Second Team All-America honors in 2019 are on the 2020 preseason list.   Linebackers Micah Parson (Penn State) and Hamilcar Rashed (Oregon State) are joined by defensive tackle Jaylen Twyman (Pittsburgh) and defensive back Derek Stingley (LSU).

Punter Max Duffy (Kentucky), a first team All-America selection a year ago, is on the 2020 preseason list along with placekicker Keith Duncan (Iowa), who earned Second Team honors in 2019.

In all, 33 different schools from eight conferences are represented on the Preseason All-America First and Second Teams (a total of 50 players selected).

The Walter Camp All-America team is the nation’s oldest All-America team. In 2019, The Foundation honored its 130th All-America team, continuing the great tradition began by the “Father of American football,” Walter Camp. The Foundation is proud to be part of the College Football 150 celebration. Over an eight-day span in early January, the Foundation recognized its All-Time All-Americans by position.
