California’s Jared Goff and Air Force’s Weston Steelhammer Named Walter Camp National FBS Players of the Week, presented by Generation UCAN

New Haven, CT – The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced the Football Bowl Subdivision National Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, presented by Generation UCAN, for games ending September 20.

About the Award: This is the 11th year that the Walter Camp Football Foundation will honor one offensive and one defensive player as its national Football Bowl Subdivision player of the week during the regular season. Recipients are selected by a panel of national media members and administered by the Foundation.

                                               

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

JARED GOFF, CALIFORNIA

Sophmore, Quarterback, Novato, CA/Marin Catholic

Jared Goff completed 23-of-41 passes for 449 yards and seven touchdowns as the Golden Bears outlasted Pac-12 rival Colorado in double overtime, 59-56.   Goff’s seven touchdown passes were a career high, and his 92-yard scoring toss was a school record. With the win, California improved to 3-1, 1-1 in the Pac 12.

 

Notes: Jared Goff is the third Cal player to earn Walter Camp POW honors, joining former Golden Bears offensive honorees DeSean Jackson (Sept. 30, 2007) and Shane Vereen (Nov. 22, 2009).

 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

WESTON STEELHAMMER, AIR FORCE

Sophomore, Defensive Back, Shreveport, LA/Calvary Baptist Academy

Weston Steelhammer tied a school and conference single-game record with three interceptions as Air Force defeated Mountain West-rival Boise State, 28-14. Steelhammer added four tackles, including two for losses, as the Falcons improved to 3-1, 1-0 in the Mountain West.

 

Notes: Weston Steelhammer is the fourth Air Force player to earn Walter Camp Player of the Week honors, joining former defensive honorees Reggie Rembert (Oct. 10, 2010), Brady Amack (Oct. 2, 2011) and Jon Davis (Nov. 6, 2011).

Walter Camp, “The Father of American football,” first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp – a former Yale University athlete and football coach – is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side.
