Alabama WR Devonta Smith and Notre Dame DE Julian Okwara Named Walter Camp FBS Players of the Week, presented by Generation UCAN

The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced the Football Bowl Subdivision National Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, presented by Generation UCAN, for games ending September 28.

About the Award: This is the 16th year that the Walter Camp Football Foundation will honor one offensive and one defensive player as its national Football Bowl Subdivision player of the week during the regular season. Recipients are selected by a panel of national media members and administered by the Foundation.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

DeVONTA SMITH, ALABAMA

Junior, Wide Receiver, Amite, LA/Amite

Devonta Smith had 11 receptions for 274 yards and five touchdowns as second-ranked Alabama (5-0) defeated Ole Miss, 59-31.  Smith’s receiving yards and touchdowns set school records, and his five touchdowns also tied a SEC single-game mark.    

Notes: Devonta Smith is the 15th Alabama player to receive Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004, and the third receiver to earn the honor, joining Christion Jones (9/1/13) and Amari Cooper(11/30/14).

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

JULIAN OKWARA, NOTRE DAME

Senior, Defensive End, Charlotte, NC/Ardrey-Kell

Julian Okwara had three quarterback sacks and forced two fumbles as 10th-ranked Notre Dame defeated 18th-ranked Virginia, 35-20.  Okwara led the Fighting Irish defensive unit, one that recorded eight total sacks on the day.

Notes: Julian Okwar is the tenth Notre Dame player to earn Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004, and the first since defensive back Aholi Gilman (Nov. 4, 2018).
