West Virginia’s Clint Trickett and Washington’s Shaq Thompson Named Walter Camp National FBS Players of the Week, presented by Generation UCAN

New Haven, CT – The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced the Football Bowl Subdivision National Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, presented by Generation UCAN (www.generationucan.com/waltercamp), for games ending September 13.

About the Award: This is the 11th year that the Walter Camp Football Foundation will honor one offensive and one defensive player as its national Football Bowl Subdivision player of the week during the regular season. Recipients are selected by a panel of national media members and administered by the Foundation.

                                               

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

CLINT TRICKETT, WEST VIRGINIA

Redshirt Senior, Quarterback, Tallahassee, FL/North Florida Christian

Clint Trickett completed 37-of-49 passes for 511 yards and four touchdowns as the Mountaineers defeated Maryland, 40-37. Trickett’s 511 passing yards were the second-highest single-game total in school history. He had scoring throws of 43, 44, 36 and 11 yards as West Virginia improved to 2-1 with the victory.

 

Notes: Clint Trickett is the fifth West Virginia player to earn Player of the week honors since 2004, and the first since two-time winner Geno Smith (Sept. 2 and 30, 2012).

 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

SHAQ THOMPSON, WASHINGTON

Junior, Linebacker, Sacramento, CA/Grant

Shaq Thompson had four tackles and scored two defensive touchdowns in the Huskies’ 44-19 victory over Illinois. Thompson returned a fumble 52 yards for a score and added an interception which he returned 36 yards for a touchdown. With the win, the Huskies improved to 3-0.

 

Notes: Shaq Thompson is the second Washington player to earn Player of the Week honors, joining former Huskie linebacker Donald Butler (Sept. 20, 2009).

Walter Camp, “The Father of American football,” first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp – a former Yale University athlete and football coach – is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side.
