Old Dominion QB Blake LaRussa and Oklahoma LB Kenneth Murray Named Walter Camp FBS Players of the Week, presented by Generation UCAN

The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced the Football Bowl Subdivision National Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, presented by Generation UCAN, for games ending September 22. 

About the Award: This is the 15th year that the Walter Camp Football Foundation will honor one offensive and one defensive player as its national Football Bowl Subdivision player of the week during the regular season. Recipients are selected by a panel of national media members and administered by the Foundation.

                                                

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

BLAKE LARUSSA, OLD DOMINION

Junior, Quarterback, Virginia Beach, VA/Bishop Sullivan

Blake LaRussa came off the bench to throw for 495 yards and four touchdowns to lead Old Dominion to a 49-35 upset of 13th-ranked Virginia Tech. LaRussa entered on ODU’s second series and completed 30 of 49 passes and ran for one score.

 

Notes: Blake LaRussa is the first ODU player to earn Walter Camp Player of the Week honors, and the first Conference USA player to earn the recognition since Louisiana Tech WR Carlos Henderson (Oct. 15, 2016).

 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

KENNETH MURRAY, OKLAHOMA

Sophomore, Linebacker, Missouri City, TX/Elkins

Linebacker Kenneth Murray set a school single-game record with 28 tackles, including as fifth-ranked Oklahoma held off Army-West Point, 28-21, in overtime.  Murray (6 solo, 22 assisted) led a Sooner defensive unit that played 44:41 as the Black Knights dominated the possession game (79 offensive plays).

 

Notes: Kenneth Murray is the eighth Oklahoma player to earn Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004, and the second this season (QB Kyler Murray, Sept. 9).

Walter Camp, “The Father of American football,” first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp – a former Yale University athlete and football coach – is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side.
