The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced the Football Bowl Subdivision National Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, presented by Generation UCAN, for games ending October 19.

About the Award: This is the 16th year that the Walter Camp Football Foundation will honor one offensive and one defensive player as its national Football Bowl Subdivision player of the week during the regular season. SHANE BUECHELE, SMU

Junior GT, Quarterback, Arlington, TX/Lamar HS

Shane Buechele set career highs in touchdowns (6) and passing yardage (457) as 19th-ranked SMU recorded a 45-21 victory over Temple.  Buechele completed 30-of-53 passes as the Mustangs improved to 7-0, 3-0 in the American Athletic Conference.

Notes: Shane Buechele is the fourth SMU player to receive Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004, and the second this season, joining teammate and WR James Proche (Oct. 6).

JAKE HANSEN, ILLINOIS

Junior, Linebacker, Tarpon Springs, FL/East Lake HS

Jake Hansen recorded 11 tackles (6 solo), one quarterback sack and forced two fumbles as Illinois defeated sixth-ranked Wisconsin, 24-23.   With the victory, Illinois improved to 3-4, 1-3 in the Big Ten.

Cee Dee Lamb had 10 catches for 171 yards and three touchdowns as fifth-ranked Oklahoma defeated 11th-ranked Texas, 34-27, in the annual Red River Showdown.  Lamb had scoring receptions for 51, 27 and one yard as the Sooners remained unbeaten (6-0).

Notes: Cee Dee Lamb is the ninth Oklahoma player to receive Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004, and the first Sooners’ receiver to earn the recognition.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

ISRAEL MUKUAMU, SOUTH CAROLINA

Sophomore, Defensive Back, Bossier City, LA/Parkway

Israel Mukuamu recorded three interceptions, including one he returned 53 yards for a touchdown, as South Carolina upset third-ranked Georgia, 20-17.  Mukuamu also had 11 tackles (7 solo) as the Gamecocks improved to 3-3 on the season.

James Proche had 11 catches for 153 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning 25-yard scoring catch as 24th-ranked SMU defeated Tulsa, 43-37, in triple overtime.  SMU, who trailed 30-9 before scoring touchdowns on their last three possessions in regulation, is 6-0 for the first time since 1982.

Notes: James Proche is the third SMU to receive Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004, joining former Mustangs Garrett Gilbert (QB, Oct. 27, 2013) and Jarvis Pruitt (DE, Oct. 22, 2016).

Jordyn Brooks recorded 19 tackles (8 solo), including 4.5 for losses, three quarterback sacks and forced one fumble as Texas Tech defeated 21st-ranked Oklahoma State, 45-35.  With the victory, the Red Raiders improved to 3-2, 1-1 in the Big 12.

Devonta Smith had 11 receptions for 274 yards and five touchdowns as second-ranked Alabama (5-0) defeated Ole Miss, 59-31.  Smith’s receiving yards and touchdowns set school records, and his five touchdowns also tied a SEC single-game mark.    

Notes: Devonta Smith is the 15th Alabama player to receive Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004, and the third receiver to earn the honor, joining Christion Jones (9/1/13) and Amari Cooper(11/30/14).

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

JULIAN OKWARA, NOTRE DAME

Senior, Defensive End, Charlotte, NC/Ardrey-Kell

Julian Okwara had three quarterback sacks and forced two fumbles as 10th-ranked Notre Dame defeated 18th-ranked Virginia, 35-20.  Okwara led the Fighting Irish defensive unit, one that recorded eight total sacks on the day.

Dorian Thompson-Robinson passed for a career-best 507 yards (25-of-38) and five touchdowns as UCLA came-from-behind to defeat 19th-ranked Washington State, 67-63, in the highest scoring game in Pac-12 history.  Thompson-Robinson led the Bruins to 50 second-half points (overcoming a 32-point deficit) on their way to their first victory of the season. 

Notes: Dorian Thompson-Robinson is the eighth UCLA player to receive Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004, and the first since former Bruin quarterback Josh Rosen (Sept. 6, 2015).

Charles Snowden recorded a career-best 15 tackles (6 solo), including 3.5 for losses, and two quarterback sacks as 21st-ranked Virginia defeated Old Dominion, 28-17.  With the victory, the Cavaliers improved to 4-0.

True freshman Dillon Gabriel passed for 347 yards and four touchdowns as 17th-ranked UCF defeated Stanford, 45-27.  Gabriel completed 22-of-30 passes, including scoring tosses of 28, 38, 38 and 1 yard to help the Knights improve to 3-0.
