White (Navy) and Wetherspoon (Missouri) Named Walter Camp National Players of the Week - August 31

The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced its Bowl Subdivision National Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for games ending August 30.

New Haven, Conn. – The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced its Bowl Subdivision National Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for games ending August 30.

Please note: Outstanding performances during games played on Sunday (Aug. 31) or Monday (Sept. 1) will be considered for next week's award.

About the Award: This is the fifth consecutive year that the Walter Camp Football Foundation will honor one offensive and one defensive player as its national Bowl Subdivision player of the week during the regular season. Recipients are selected by a panel of national media members and administered by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

SHUN WHITE, NAVY

Senior, Slot Back, Memphis, TN/Raleigh-Egypt HS

Senior slot back Shun White set a Navy single-game rushing record with 348 yards (on just 19 carries) and scored three touchdowns to lead the Midshipmen to a season-opening 41-13 victory over Towson. White scored on runs of 87, 73 and 33 yards and racked up 211 yards in the first half. White eclipsed the previous school record of 298 yards, set by Eddie Meyers in 1981 against Syracuse. The victory also marked the first for new Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

SEAN WETHERSPOON, MISSOURI

Junior, Linebacker, Jasper, TX/Jasper HS

Junior linebacker Sean Wetherspoon had nine tackles and two interceptions, including one he returned for a touchdown, to lead sixth-ranked Missouri to a 52-42 win over 20th-ranked Illinois in the Arch Rivalry game. Wetherspoon, who added one tackle for loss and one quarterback hurry, intercepted a pass and returned it 35 yards for a score with just 3:18 left in the contest to give the Tigers a 17-point cushion.

Walter Camp, “The Father of American football,” first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp – a former Yale University athlete and football coach – is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation – a New Haven-based all-volunteer group – was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting annually an All-America team.
