New Haven, Conn. – The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced its Bowl Subdivision National Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for games ending September 22.
About the Award: It is the fourth consecutive year that the Walter Camp Football Foundation will honor one offensive and one defensive player as its national “Bowl Subdivision Player of the Week.” Selections are made each week during the regular season by a panel of national media members and publicized by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK MATT FORTÉ TULANE, Senior, Running Back, Slidell, LA/Slidell HS Senior running back Matt Forté set a school and Conference USA record with 303 rushing yards (on 40 carries) and scored a school-record five touchdowns as Tulane defeated Southeastern Louisiana, 35-27. Forté, who totaled 177 rushing yards in the second half, scored on runs of 20, 21, 3, 4 and 11 yards to lead the Green Wave to their first win of the season.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK GEORGE SELVIE, SOUTH FLORIDA, Sophomore, Defensive End, Pensacola, FL/Pine Forest HS Sophomore defensive end George Selvie had three quarterback sacks and 5.5 tackles for losses as 23rd ranked South Florida defeated North Carolina, 37-10. Selvie totaled six tackles for the game as the Bulls (3-0) allowed UNC just 164 yards of total offense. This is the second time Selvie has earned Walter Camp Player of the Week honors (Nov. 26, 2006).
Walter Camp, "The Father of American football," first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp — a former Yale University athlete and football coach — is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation — a New Haven based all volunteer group — was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting annually an All America team.
