McCoy (Texas) and Smith (USC) Earn Final Walter Camp Player of the Week Honors

The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced its Bowl Championship Subdivision National Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for games ending November 28 - the final weekly selections for the 2009 season.

New Haven, Conn. – The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced its Bowl Championship Subdivision National Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for games ending November 28 - the final weekly selections for the 2009 season.

About the Award: This is the sixth year that the Walter Camp Football Foundation will honor one offensive and one defensive player as its national Bowl Subdivision player of the week during the regular season. Recipients are selected by a panel of national media members and administered by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

COLT McCOY, TEXAS

Senior, Quarterback, Tuscola, TX/Jim Ned

Texas quarterback Colt McCoy accounted for 479 yards of total offense (304 passing, 175 rushing) and five touchdowns as the third-ranked Longhorns defeated Big-12 rival Texas A&M, 49-39, on Thanksgiving evening. McCoy completed 24-of-40 passes and added a 65-touchdown run as the Longhorns improved to 12-0, 8-0 in the Big 12.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

MALCOLM SMITH, USC

Junior, Linebacker, Northridge, CA/Taft

USC junior linebacker Malcolm Smith had a game-high 15 tackles (7 solo), including 1.5 tackles for loss, and returned an interception 62 yards for a touchdown as the 24th-ranked Trojans defeated cross-town rival UCLA, 24-7. Smith’s play helped USC improve to 8-3, 5-3 in the Pac-10.

Walter Camp, “The Father of American football,” first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp – a former Yale University athlete and football coach – is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation – a New Haven-based all-volunteer group – was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting annually an All-America team.
