Georgia Tech’s Justin Thomas and Washington’s Azeem Victor Named Walter Camp FBS Players of the Week, presented by Generation UCAN

The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced the Football Bowl Subdivision National Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, presented by Generation UCAN, for games ending October 29.

About the Award: This is the 13th year that the Walter Camp Football Foundation will honor one offensive and one defensive player as its national Football Bowl Subdivision player of the week during the regular season. Recipients are selected by a panel of national media members and administered by the Foundation.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

JUSTIN THOMAS, GEORGIA TECH

RS Senior, Quarterback, Prattburgh, AL/Prattburgh

Justin Thomas ran for 195 yards with two touchdowns and threw for 264 yards and two touchdowns to become the first Georgia Tech player with 400 yards of total offense since 2001 as the Yellowjackets defeated Duke, 38-35.  With the victory, Georgia Tech improved to 5-3, 2-3 in the ACC.

 

Notes: Justin Thomas is the second Georgia Tech player to earn Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004. On Oct. 25, 2015, defensive back Jamal Golden earn the recognition.

 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

AZEEM VICTOR, WASHINGTON

Junior, Upland, CA/Pomona

Azeem Victor totaled 16 tackles, including 10 solo stops and one tackle for loss, as fourth-ranked Washington remained unbeaten with a 31-24 victory over 17th-ranked Utah.  With the victory, the Huskies improved to 8-0, 5-0 in the Pac12.

 

Notes: Azeem Victor is the fourth Washington player, and second this season (Psalm Wooching, Oct. 2,  to earn Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004. Former Husky linebackers Donald Butler (Sept. 20, 2009) and Shaq Thompson (Sept. 14, 2014) also were honored.

Walter Camp, “The Father of American football,” first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp – a former Yale University athlete and football coach – is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side.
